Experiential Learning Youth Program

About the program

The Goetheanum Experiential Learning Youth Program is a continuous education program for students between 18 and 28 years of age who are wishing to pursue and deepen their understanding of a subject through experiential learning and service opportunities as well as text study and discussion based seminars on Anthroposophy. It is offered by the Youth Section at the Goetheanum.

The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their understanding through various modes of learning. Upon joining the program, the student becomes involved in at least one of the learning lines focused on service, experience and study described below. These lines allow students to develop skills through practical experience, study, reflection, conversation within the context of a related practical project which can focus on artistic, social or service learning. Besides being able to develop as individuals, participating in a group project allows them to develop capacities for collaboration, cooperation and dialogue.

Admission

Entrance into the course is based on a written application followed by an interview. The faculty will evaluate the student’s capabilities to participate in relevant activities, to understand a subject and discipline and to participate in discussion based seminars.

The student is fully enrolled once they have signed the Student Agreement (see separate attachment) and paid the matriculation fees.

Lines of Learning

“Aesthetics” through the New Pegasus Project

This project involves an exploration of the artistic and aesthetic dimensions of color and sound, as well as their synaesthetic dimensions, through text study, seminars and the creation of an interdisciplinary project. The program covers an introduction to color and form theories, with special reference to the history of modern visual music, live painting and projection techniques. In like measure the student will be introduced to the basic formal elements of the music, tones, intervals, harmony, melody and rhythm, with a special emphasis on the historical musical modes. Through texts, conversation and art studio practice sessions both color and sound will be explored independently and in their mutual connections. The program will culminate in an interdisciplinary artistic sharing that involves the student to demonstrate, and share, with a wider public, what they have been able to achieve in skills and learning.

Learning in Context through Service

This project involves learning through experience and service by participating in practical activities on the Goetheanum Campus and seminars. The Goetheanum as a campus that regularly hosts cultural events, gatherings of the General Anthroposophical Society and further education programs. This transdisciplinary and experiential learning program is conceived to facilitate opportunities for young people to learn through hands on activities, while also developing a deeper understanding of particular fields, in a context of service. Examples; helping with the maintenance of the unique buildings on campus while also developing an understanding for architecture through exercises, seminars and study; helping to prepare meals and host large groups of people at the Goetheanum while learning about agriculture, food sources and nutrition.

Gift Economy through the Global Access and Project Fund

This line offers the student opportunities to learn about fundraising processes to support a youth scholarship and grant fund that has been specifically designed to facilitate explorations of social ideas of interdependence, cooperation and mutual support. Besides learning about fundraising, networking between different youth groups, and being part of a collective decision making process at the culmination of the each fundraising cycle, the student is able to study social theory, engage in discussions and to reflect on their relevance while being engaged in testing them in action. Through the program a young person can gain experience of important facets of social life like solidarity, cooperation and responsibility, not only in theory, but in practice.

As an action research project the merits of the orientation can be reflected on upon the conclusion of one cycle of funding. Students participating in the three lines of study attend daily morning classes on Rudolf Steiner’s basic texts in order to become acquainted with the foundational elements found in anthroposophical literature as a basis for praxis.
