Goetheanum Studies: Second Time Around

I attended the Goetheanum Anthroposophical Studies from 2010 to 2011. After 4 years, I relocated from Australia to Basel - permanently living here since March 2015.

Back in 2018, I chanced upon Rudolf Steiner’s book “Goethe’s Theory of Knowledge”. However, it was only during the first lockdown in 2020 that I realized how I knew virtually nothing about Goethe despite his huge presence in the Anthroposophical community. Later that year, I found out - “by chance” - that there would be a semester at the Goetheanum that would have a session on Goethe’s Epistemology.

My normal way of thinking is, ‘I will think about it.” But in my heart, I knew that I wanted to attend that course no matter what. So, I made the decision to take the course - and I am glad I did! I am happy to attend the Goetheanum Anthroposophical Studies the second time around.

I have been on a wonderful journey since then - not without hitting some rocks along the way. We studied Rudolf Steiner’s “Goethe’s Theory of Knowledge”, “Theosophy”, “Philosophy of Freedom”, and “The Imperative of Responsibility” by Hans Jonas. Other themes included Biography, Christianity as a Mystical Fact, Threefold Social Order, and meetings with section leaders from the Goetheanum. Artistic endeavours like painting, clay and stonework, eurythmy, nature observation, and appreciation of Steiner’s Architectural impulse also enlivened the course.

Included in all this was the challenge of the lockdown due to the Covid situation. Therefore, a lot of the classes had to be via zoom. Personally, I didn’t expect it to work so well! I still do hope for the time when we could meet in person again.
One of the surprises for me was learning how to Cross-Stitch. I decided to create a (possible) laptop cover with the Swiss map on it (photo attached) and it is a work in progress.
