In remembrance of Sophia Walsh, March 23, 1930 – January 7, 2022

From the beginning of the Anthroposophical Studies in the fall of 2001 the curriculum plan centered on the effort to have two main aspects: the study of Rudolf Steiner`s three basic books and a rich artistic experience based upon his impulses for the visual arts and for speech formation and eurythmy.

On those days it was possible to also have afternoon classes, therefore the artistic subjects each could occur twice a week which enhanced the practice possibilities and a deepening quality.

A good star shone over our initial efforts and Sophia Walsh agreed to teach speech formation. Many of you will remember her vibrant voice and her total engagement as she encouraged you to not just “speak” but to “form” your speech. The results of your combined efforts were amazingly audible at the performances concluding each trimester! She exhibited great versatility when encountering the situation of the students who came from other languages. In addition to the group classes twice a week she also was willing to work privately with students. Over the years quite a number of students welcomed this opportunity. One student from England who could study several years at the Goetheanum, remarked when she heard of Sophia`s passing, that she gained from her a wide cultural experience of poetry and drama.

All of us will gratefully remember Sophia as a great artist and an excellent teacher!
